FIVE

Tanner

I'm leaning against the kitchen counter when the back door clicks open. My pulse revs up, a familiar thrill coursing through me as she slips inside. "Hey," Molly whispers, that mischievous sparkle in her big brown eyes making my heart skip.

"Hey yourself," I murmur, closing the space between us with a couple of strides. My hands find the small of her back, pulling her close. She's warmth and all the home comforts I've been craving rolled into one petite, beautiful package.

Our lips crash together, no hellos needed, just this—raw and real. The kiss deepens, our tongues tangoing with a hunger that feels like it's been building for lifetimes. Every touch is fire, every breath shared.

She’s my other half.

"Missed you," she breathes out, her fingers tracing the line of my jaw, down to the dog tags that still hang around my neck.

"Every second," I promise, meaning every damn word. We're a tangle of limbs and need, right here in my kitchen, where any of my nosy neighbors could peer through a window and spot us. But risk has become part of the taste of her, and I can't get enough.

"Got something for you," I say, pulling back just enough to see the question in her eyes. The corners of her mouth lift in a smile that nearly knocks me sideways every time.

"Is it food?" she teases, because she knows me, knows the way to my own heart is through my stomach, just like hers.

"Better," I say with a wink, leading her by the hand. I guide her out the back, to where the night has laid out a blanket of stars above us. There's a real blanket spread on the grass, and I've filled a basket with everything Molly loves—chocolate-covered strawberries, a Caprese salad with that fancy mozzarella she adores, and a bottle of sparkling cider because she's got class.

"Wow," she gasps, stepping onto the blanket and looking around at the fairy lights I've strung up in the trees. It's no SEAL mission, but planning this gave me the same adrenaline rush, more actually because it was for her.

"Only the best for you," I say, proud as hell of the setup. We settle down, the evening air just crisp enough to make her snuggle closer. I pop the cork on the cider, pour us each a glass, and we cheer. "To us," I say, because there's no one else in this picture. Not now, not ever.

We feed each other bites, laughter mingling with the soft rustling of leaves. Her laugh is a melody I'd recognize anywhere, light and free, undoing the knots inside me piece by piece.

"Did you cook all this yourself?" she asks, eyebrow raised in playful skepticism.

"Hey, I can navigate a kitchen. Mostly," I admit, grinning. We eat, talk about everything and nothing, and I thank whatever fates have let me have this—her company, her smile, her.

I’m a lucky bastard.

As dinner winds down, the candles flicker and the stars seem to shine just for us. Every glance she throws my way is charged with that sweet tension that promises more—so much more.
